Overview
Mercedes-AMG, the high-performance subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz, is renowned for engineering vehicles that seamlessly blend luxury with exhilarating performance. Established in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in Großaspach, Germany, AMG began as an independent firm specializing in enhancing Mercedes-Benz vehicles for racing. Their early success, notably with the AMG-modified Mercedes 300 SEL 6.8 securing a class victory at the 1971 24 Hours of Spa, cemented AMG’s reputation in the motorsport arena.
The collaboration between AMG and Mercedes-Benz deepened over the years, leading to DaimlerChrysler AG acquiring a controlling interest in AMG in 1999 and full ownership by 2005. This integration resulted in the creation of iconic models such as the C 36 AMG in 1993, the first jointly developed vehicle under the partnership.
